Jan. 8, 1924 - Feb. 6, 2014 Calvin L. Mercer, Sr., 90 passed away after a short illness. He is survived by his son Calvin Mercer Jr., his son’s wife Trudy and their son Bobby Mercer, all of Va. and his daughter Paula Biviano, her husband Joseph and their son Joel all of NC. He is also survived by his step-daughter Marie Wilson, her husband John and their daughter Kelli all of CO., Debra Slomski, her husband Dick of Fla. as well as his other step-daughter Linda Baily of Fla. Mr. Mercer is also survived by a half-brother Vigil Mercer and a sister-in law Tez Mercer. Finally he is survived by a step-son Evan Daniel.
Calvin Mercer proudly served in the Marine Corps during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He served as an infantryman during the invasion of Guam and later during the battle of Iwo Jima where he was seriously wounded in both legs by Japanese machine gun fire. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 1946.
Mr. Mercer was a member of the local Marine Corps League as well as the local chapter of the Experimental Aviation Association. He had worked at different professions including air conditioning mechanic, farmer and crop duster.
Calvin loved to dance and play dominoes which he did every week.
He was especially fond of his two nurses Wanda Cole and Ruth Ann Johnson who would take him to medical appointments whenever needed and also his nephew Dale Hart who was always helping with small jobs around the house.
He was always surrounded by friends and family.
A memorial service will be held on Feb. 23, at Mt. Gilead Baptist church at 1:15 p.m. located at 18305 56th Street in Live Oak, Fla.
